Gordon and Sharon Arwine "Taught Thousands to Ski Safely at Crystal" For more than 40 years, Gordy and Sharon Arwine have made skiing safer with ongoing commitments to the Ski Patrol and ski instruction. The Arwines joined the Crystal Mountain Ski School as instructors, then purchased it from Jack Nagel in 1979. They owned the ski school for 25 years,
teaching more than 30,000 kids the fundamentals of the sport, then selling the school to Crystal Mountain last fall. Sharon was First Aid Advisor for the ski patrol's Pacific Northwest Division (WA/ORE/ID), while Gordy served as Ski Patrol Examiner. Both were named to the rank of "National". When not teaching or serving ski patrollers, Sharon "stood on many cold race courses" with "mentors" Betsy
Withington, Jo Spickard, Mary Black, Jeanne Beall, Grace Devin, Sally McNabb and many other moms. Gordy and Sharon each served as President of Capitol Skiers. Gordy was elected to two terms on the Board of Professional Ski Instructors of America – NW. Keeping current on changes in equipment, customer expectations and weather were among the challenges of running the ski school. Each week
they were responsible for the "go-no-go" decision for at times 30+ buses. "The biggest challenge was trying to make coming to the mountain a good experience for all ski school students." |
