The Nagel family skiing tradition is well-known around the world and especially in the Northwest where Jack and Donna Nagel tutored people new to the sport and hundreds of aspiring ski racers. Donna and the late Jack Nagel, who was inducted into the Crystal Founders Hall of Fame in 2004, pioneered ski area retailing with the first ski school and ski racing programs to help grow the
sport.
In 1962 the Nagels were recruited to start a ski school at Crystal Mountain, having proven their ski school and ski racing prowess at Stevens Pass where they managed the Osborn and Ulland Retail Center there.
The Nagels along with two daughters, Cathy and Judy, made the move to Crystal and the rest is history. Many of the supervisors, instructors and coaches followed the Nagels to Crystal to join the growing Nagel Ski School, and Crystal Mountain Ski and
Rental Shop operations. The 'Gas House Gang' and the Yellow Jackets from Stevens Pass inspired the Crystal Mountain Athletic Club and a racing tradition at Crystal Mountain. Meanwhile the two Nagel daughters, Cathy and Judy, developed national and international recognition as world class skiers.
Donna took ownership of Crystal's ski/rental shop in 1979, where she outfitted and rented skis/boots to thousands of Crystal skiers. The Nagel family provided the first-rate
service and competition that made Crystal Mountain a premier ski area in Washington State. |
