Robert W. "Bob" Simpson, MD "Early Crystal Pioneer and Longtime "Board Member"
Bob Simpson, an Alaska native and pioneer of Crystal Mountain, participated in the organization and birth of Crystal Mountain Ski Area. From 1957 to 1962, Bob, along with other board members, made many summer and winter excursions into the base area camping in an old miner's cabin, skiing out through the trees to take snow surveys. Bob's primary duty was to sell shares of Crystal Mountain stock in anticipation that Crystal would eventually get the agency commitments required for
building the access road. As a result of enormous efforts made by Fran LeSourd and the CM Board members, the State Highway Commissioners voted in 1959 to build the road which is now Crystal Mountain Blvd. $1 Million was raised, and in 1962 Crystal Mountain Ski Area opened with two lifts and the Day Lodge. Bob was the second skier down the mountain. The Board sold more stock during that first 1962-63 light-snow season in order to build the Green Valley lift and to
have more operating capital. Bob was an influential supporter of the first chair lift built in Campbell Basin in order to expand the area for intermediate skiers. Bob Simpson served on the Board of Directors for 23 years and skied at Crystal well into his 80's. |
