Timeline: 1980's
1981
Ed Link retires after thirteen years as general manager, prompted by the board. Edward P. "Ed" Carney is hired as general manager and his troubled term lasts until 1983. Frank Campbell is his initial mountain manager, followed by Steve Hebard.
1983
Bullion Basin triple (now C-7) is moved and replaces T-bar (today's Gold Hills chair).
Norm McKinnon starts his short seven-month term as general manager. Bill Sims is area manager.

1984
Wallace "Wally" Staatz, then chairman of the board, fills in as interim general manager after McKinnon's controversial dismissal. Mike Paul is mountain manager.
Ed Carney launches takeover bid and the board files suit. Carney and board reach our-of-court settlement in May.
Discovery fixed-grip triple (C-8) replaces rope tows on beginners' run, leaving from base area, also providing access to Quicksilver (C-4).
Rendezvous fixed-grip triple (C-9) is built, leaving from the base area (replaced by Chinook Express in 1998).
Thomas "Tom" Leonard is hired as general manager in September, a position he holds through the 1997 sale to Boyne USA. James Mitchell is mountain manager; Bill Steel is base manager/supervisor and then director of planning and facilities.
1985
Day Lodge is remodeled in summer, becoming close to what we see today (with exception of Level C scramble and Bullwheel open kitchen, which come after sale to Boyne USA).

1987
CM Holdings, organized by former area superintendent Don Christianson, proffers takeover bid.
Crystal's stock offering -the third in its history- crosses CM Holdings' offer in the mail and wins out with stockholders at fall annual meeting.
1988
Crystal launches chairlift building boom: Rainier Express (C-10) to Summit House is the first high-speed quad installed in the state and replaces Iceberg Ridge double (C-2). Campbell Basin double (C-5) is shortened and Midway Shuttle quad (C-11) is built, leaving from the base area to link with Rainier Express.
1989
Thomas L. Matson becomes chairman of the board through 1994.
